LIKES: history, his job (on most days), tea and coffee, classic rock music, reading, and when his students make progress
DISLIKES: annoying parents, being interrupted, being ignored, being disrespected, being single, and the vice president of the school (but shh! don’t tell anyone)
STRENGTHS: history, keeping calm and collected, thinking logically, being approachable by others, weighing cons and pros when making an important decision, and understanding people
WEAKNESSES: well he doesn’t like to be reminded that he’s single, coffee, mathematics, he hates the rain, and sometimes he’s too carefree
GOALS: to become a better teacher, to encourage his students, to get a girlfriend
FEARS: his sister’s death, that his sister and he won’t be able to pay off student loans, bees
SECRET(S): believe it or not, he’s still a virgin
OVERALL: In a nutshell, Mr. Reed is a very, very patient man. He has to be, dealing with some of the students Harbour Academy brings into its dysfunctional family. He isn’t one to raise his voice easily so when he does, it’s a sign to show he means business and you’d better sit your ass down and shut the hell up if you know what’s good for you. Because he’s patient, he has a very graceful wit about him. He’s very intelligent, quick with his words, and has a way of persuading someone even when he doesn’t mean to. He’s kind of like a modern gentleman. A fun, not so strict modern gentleman.
He believes in one-on-one teaching, getting to know his students with their strengths and faults and all and working around their abilities. He’s good at characterizing people and understanding them and their needs. Mr. Reed’s the kind of guy you want to have a serious sit-down with. He’s a great listener and an honest man with honest input. Some would call him wise beyond his years, though he claims that the ability has just come with practice.
Now, Mr. Reed is a different man in the classroom than he is outside of it. Though he’s a patient man and though he believes in individuality…he don’t take no shit. You’d better do his work, with a passing quality and you’d better well do it on time. Tardiness is one thing Mr. Reed will absolutely not tolerate. Maybe it’s because he’s a disciplined man himself or maybe it’s due to the fact that he doesn’t want anyone wasting his precious time. Who knows? Most students love him and those who don’t usually can’t come up with an adequate reason as why he rubs them the wrong way.

father: David Reed - forty three- deceased
SIBLING(S): sister: Kathy Reed - twenty – college student/barista

HISTORY: Elliot has been at the top of his class ever since he could remember. He always had the most popularity, the highest grades, the most invites to crazy parties on the weekends, everything. Though, his high grades could be thanks to his father, who was a historical journalist during his lifetime. Even when he was a child, history lessons have always been a part of his life—hell, they were his bedtime stories! Not that Elliot ever complained. He’s always found history rather interesting. In fact, the subject itself has become his father’s legacy.
Tragedy struck Mr. Reed in his first year of college when his father passed away from elongated illnesses. His mother tried to cope with the pain of losing her beloved, but in the end depression claimed her as well. With only three months of peace between his father’s death and his mother’s death, Elliot had given up on college, so he dropped out for a few semesters. Then, he met a good friend who might as well as slapped him across the face. Elliot was awoken from his deep depression and got himself in gear and back into a very renowned college.
After many years (including tortuous summers) of education, Elliot was able to get his degree in record time. Impressively, he was immediately called to teach by numerous academies—including the well known and handsomely paying Harbour Academy. Needless to say, Mr. Reed took the opportunity when it came knocking and began his teaching career in not only a private school, but a private school for a bunch of rich kids with very wealthy and connected parents. Not, that he likes their parents very much. The kids are great! He loves his job working with the kids (most of the time). It’s the stuck-up parents he can’t stand. What he has to put up with for his paycheck…

When Elliot Reed retrieved his mail from the teachers’ mailboxes, he was not expecting a note from Harbour Academy’s principal. Inwardly, the man sighed and prayed to the mighty one above that he wasn’t asked to attend a parent-teacher conference. He’d had enough of those last semester, thank you very much. Outwardly, he remained calm and brought the letter back into his classroom. That’s right, his classroom.
He sat down in the dark wood chair and—after checking that the Vice Principal wasn’t passing down his hallway—kicked his feet up upon the desk and reclined in his seat. Since said vice principal wasn’t spying on him like he seemed to enjoy doing, Mr. Reed let out a long, frustrated sigh. After he’d argued with himself about when to open the letter, he sat up again, clapped his hands together, and grabbed for the white parchment. Carefully, he ripped along the edges and withdrew a Post-it—yeah, you read right; a Post-it—from the envelope. At first, Elliot only shook his head quizzically. Why on this big glorious earth would the Principal choose to write an important message on a damn Post-it? It wasn’t very professional and it probably wasted more trees than did typing it up and printing it out. The Principal was a big fan of Post-its, after all. After Mr. Reed had registered that he was supposed to read what was on the inappropriate Post-it, he lowered his gaze to recognize the sloppy cursive writing of the man in charge.
Mr. Reed sat there for a good two minutes before he could decipher what was actually written. Honestly, would it kill the man to work on his penmanship? It was as he feared. He was being summoned to meet with a parent and “uninspired student.†Since when was it his job to inspire? He wasn’t a damn philosopher! The now enraged teacher threw the note back onto his desk and ran a hand through his rich chocolate brown hair. Though rich and though it took most of his high school years to grow it to this perfection, Mr. Reed felt like ripping it all out.
“I see you got my letter,†said the Principal from the doorway amusedly, which only tested Elliot on how much he wanted this job. The answer was very badly and he wisely chose to keep his mouth shut.
“What did I do this time?†he asked simply.
“You know how it is, Elliot. When a child is failing, the parent immediately jumps on the teacher. It’s not your fault. I know this student. Even a miracle worker couldn’t cure his…shall I say lethargy.â€
“Wonderful.â€
The Principal laughed. “I’ll be there with you at the meeting. Don’t worry so much. You’re doing everything right.â€
“I guess that means I get to keep my job?â€
“For now,†said the Principal tauntingly, though he had every right to say it.
“Right. For now.â€
For now. The words echoed in his head, even as the Principal left his classroom. He needed this job; there was no doubt about that. Without a teaching job…well, Elliot didn’t want to think about that. He’d be in some deep shit, that’s for sure. Not only was he paying for himself (a nice car, nice apartment that had nice heat…did he mention a nice car?), he was paying off his student loans and supporting his little sister as she went to college. Luckily, she’d picked a state school, so tuition wasn’t too high, but still…
He couldn’t imagine the look on her face if he told her she’d have to quit college because he couldn’t pay for it. He didn’t want to imagine it because he knew she wouldn’t be angry. She’d be supportive and understanding and that made it all worse.
No, he’d keep this job and he’d leap over the table and slap this parent senseless to do it. Though, after reconsidering his latter statement and thinking over the consequences, Mr. Reed sighed and ripped up the note.
