he sat in class twirling his pencil in his fingers not really paying attention to what the teacher was saying. it was hard to hear what she was saying anyways because of the two girls in front of him intensely spreading rumors about two boys that they thought were extremely attractive. asher rolled his eyes as they both talked about what they had been wearing today as if it was important. he wondered if all girls talked as much as these two did. every day it was the same thing but the boys they talked about were constantly changing. sometimes it would be about some big party where these boys would be and they tried to figure out how to get their attention. asher would feel sorry for whatever guys ended up with these girls because they would end up talking their ear off. the one thing that asher would probably never understand would have to be how girls worked. and listening to these two every day he wasn't sure he wanted to know how they worked because all they seemed to be was complicated. he wondered if his sister was the type to have these conversations in the middle of class. tapping his fingers impatiently against the desk he wanted this class just to be over even though lunch was next. but after that he only had two more classes before he could go home which was what he really needed. he had a big project he wanted to get started on so he could be finished by the end of the week. then he'd have more time to focus on other things. the bell rang and he slowly gathered his things as everyone else seemed to rush out of the room to the cafeteria. asher reluctantly followed the crowd as he tried to avoid crashing into the people running past him.
asher was not a fan of the cafeteria that was for sure. it was crowded and extremely loud. he already had his lunch that he had made at home so now all he had to do was find a place to sit. asher normally ate lunch on his own which he really didn't mind because he always had a book with him to keep him entertained. his sister was always there to offer him a seat with her if he wanted but the last person he needed to take pity on him was his sister. he didn't feel lonely sitting by himself and he was happy to do it. it was different for her because she was so charismatic and always had people drawn in by her personality. even though they were twins they really were opposites. he was always working on school and striving to meet his father's expectations. while she did whatever she pleased and was always admired by their father. even though she had it easier than he did asher never resented his sister. she was still the same person he was closest too before everything had happened. it was pretty different living without her around. asher was practically living on his own because his mother was always working to support their one family paycheck. it was just the both of them and she attempted to make the environment as stress free as possible. she was extremely careful about everything she said and did around him still thinking that he was fragile and could break at any moment. he wanted to tell her that he was all better and he wouldn't do something as stupid as that again but he knew it would be no use. asher did understand the error of his ways and he really was trying to take things much easier at this new school. he pushed these thoughts out of his head just wanting to have a nice quiet lunch on his own without any reminders of how things use to be. finding an empty table asher took a seat and got his lunch and his book out of his bag. unwrapping his sandwich he took a bit out of it as he used his other hand to find where he had left off in his book. it was hard to concentrate in this area with people all around him eating and laughing together.

_________________________________________________ Fifteen minutes to go before lunch started and Katya was utterly bored by her English teacher who seemed to be struggling on how to lay out his own sentence. Her teacher wasn’t a horrible person, but he just seemed like he spent a lot of time….alone, with his own thoughts, and it had taken a toll on his speech abilities. Katya sighed and pulled out her phone as she texted Violet and Sydney letting them know she would be in the cafeteria early and to just meet her at their usual table. After the text sent, Katya put her phone in her back pocket and lifted herself off her desk with her planner in hand as she approached the teacher and asked for a bathroom pass. The teacher looked at her and paused for a few seconds before nodding repeatedly and signed her book. Katya gave him a small smile as she turned around and headed for what would soon be a jungle filled with animals, the cafeteria. Walking through the hallways, Katya glanced over classes, seeing the extremely tired look on most of the student’s faces and not blaming them for it at all.
Whoever thought that high school should start as early as it did should have been shot multiple times, in the head. Katya laughed a little as she shook her head now a few steps away from the empty, peaceful cafeteria. I have issues she thought to herself thinking of how she came up with the ideas in her head. Seeing as how she was fully able to walk through the food line without being bumped or waiting forever, the brunette walked right in picking up a cup of fries, an apple, and some apple juice. It’s been a while since Katya ate the actual food the cafeteria cooked, mainly because the last time she tried the taco salad she was puking for days. The fries looked decent and the apple did as well, no harm there so far. Thanking the lady at the register out of pure politeness Katya walked turned around and headed to the table where her and her friends always sat. While waiting for the gun to go off, well the lunch bell, Katya plugged in hear ear plugs and started to munch on some fries.
Minutes later she saw some students come in, one by one, then two’s, and then a handful, filling up the cafeteria quickly as usual. It didn’t take too long before Violet and Sydney were walking to the table with their trays and Katya smiled as she took off her ear plugs and started talking to them. All of a sudden, something, rather someone caught Violet’s attention. A shaggy, brown haired boy, who seemed to be eating a packed lunch all alone at the table. Violet was sort of teasing him to her friends about being alone and a nerd and Katya gave her a look as if to say ‘really?”. She loved Violet like a sister, but was it really necessary to do all that? Katya rolled her eyes and without warning stood up as she was making her way to the boy’s empty table and took a seat on the chair next to him crossing her legs. “Hey there” she said with a grin crossing her arms as if she and the boy, who she did think was a bit familiar perhaps from a previous class or so, had known each other for a while. “What’cha reading?” she asked as she glanced at his book then back at him with a friendly smile…….

asher looked up wondering who had come over to speak to him. normally he went through the entire lunch period on his own but every once in a while his sister or someone he knew would come up to him to chat for a bit. but the person who was sitting right next to him was not someone he expected to speak to him. she was in one of his classes and she was rather eccentric. but he had to admit most of the things she said and did were rather entertaining. though he didn't even know she knew he existed which was why her presence came as such a surprise. hey he said quietly still trying to asses what she wanted. but all she asked was for what book he was reading and his eyes left the focus on her and turned towards his book. vonnegut's cat's cradle he said holding up the cover so that she could see. he was a fan of vonnegut's work and this was probably the fourth time that he had gone through this book. they way he wrote things was just so different and much more interesting then what they were reading in his english class.
it's a pretty good book he commented attempting to involve himself in this conversation. honestly being around her was making him a little nervous because he saw the way she was around some people. she wasn't the type to take anything from anyone. it also seemed like everything she said was extremely sarcastic so he wouldn't even know if they were having an actual conversation or not. running a hand through his hair asher scanned the crowd and noticed a few people watching them talk to each other curious to what was going on. not that he blamed them, she was on a whole different level than he was. asher wasn't use to talking to girls especially ones that knew how to use their looks to get what they wanted. he was honestly just expecting her to ask for help with her homework or something because he tended to get those requests from most people. especially the populars who never seemed to want to do their own work and asher wasn't about to do it for them. unlike most people he wasn't looking for acceptance from their group which made it harder for them to get what they wanted out of him. this high school was just like the last one he had went to but now he was focusing more on what was going on around him than his actual work.

_________________________________________________ It humored Katya a little as she abruptly sat down in front of the brown haired boy giving her a look as if asking himself if she was lost or perhaps even….crazy. Crazy was something Katya would completely agree with if someone called her that, but lost, never. As disorganized as Katya was, she was very much in charge of her life and where she went physically and metaphorically. All Katya did thus far was greet the boy, smile, and ask him what was directing his attention away from all the noise surrounding the cafeteria. So far, she was harmless. This only confirmed by his return greeting, although it was still a little shy, it just kept the smile on Katya’s face. Mostly because she would have felt a tad bit embarrassed if she actually went out of her way to talk to him and he completely ignored her existence.
Katya never necessarily went out of her way to be different than most people, but she didn’t like being predictable either. So going up to the guy and just asking him what’s up was a conversation that was bound to end sooner than Rebecca Black’s fame. She figured if she asked him something about the book he was reading, she would get more of a response and not just a creepy stare with confusion sprinkled in. The boy’s attention shifted from her to the book as he voiced the title. Reading wasn’t exactly Katya’s forte so when he answered her question, it might as well have been in latin. “Sounds……different.” she answered nodding her head slowly. “Something that’s definitely not on the syllabus for any of our mediocre English teachers” she said with a light laugh as she uncrossed her legs and rested them instead on the table.
“Don’t you hate it when one leg tries to fall asleep on you?” she questioned looking a little annoyed. Mostly because one of her legs begin to feel the numb sensation and it was beginning to bother her. “Anyways…” she said trying to get back into the body of their conversation as the boy stamped his approval about the book he was reading. “What about it interests you exactly?” she asked curiously wondering why the boy would read a book that wouldn’t benefit him with a good grade on his free time. Who knows, maybe if he sold her on the book, Katya might buy it….or rent it and read a few pages on her spare time, big maybe. Katya looked at the boy beginning to describe the story and she smiled a little at the enthusiasm and motivation, the same that was inspired in her with music and dancing…..
