Dainton had arranged to meet his partner for their English project, in the library. He had avoided her attempts to get together before now- pretending he had football practice or something. It was pretty lame; and although Dainton was reasonably good at English; he didn’t see why he had to meet up with someone he barely knew, to write some paper, when he could do it himself. He’d gone to their teacher to complain but they hadn’t been too interested. It was an assignment and he had to get on with it. So reluctantly he stood outside the library contemplating his meeting. He knew little about Valene except she wasn’t one of his people. It wasn’t that he disliked her; he couldn’t really judge that, it was just he wasn’t really up for joint working unless it included exploring his female partners anatomy. Not that he really expected Valene to do such a thing; but she was pretty so who knew.
He pushed open the door to the library, somewhat surprised by it’s modern appearance. He hadn’t really ventured into the library much, and so when he did, he was often surprised that it didn’t look like the dusty old libraries you sometimes saw in films. He was greeted by the tapping of key boards, and a dull whisper coming from students working together discussing their ideas. He glanced around and spotted an empty table. Dainton was very aware that a few people looked at him in surprise, as he walked towards and then sat down at the work station. He took a note book and a pen from his bag and began doodling on the lined paper.
Dainton was good at drawing, despite never really taking his talent much further than doodling and designing his own tattoos. Not that his current tattoos were very adventurous; but he was planning something bigger and better. It was one of the designs he was drawing now; although he’d not decided on it exactly, but he knew it was going to be some sort of tribute to his brother. The picture he was currently drawing was a combination of angel wings, and an odd pattern which entangled words and names. He wasn’t sure on the size, where he was going to get it, what he was going to get or when, but he was enjoying experimenting with images and text on paper. His father on the other hand was already incredibly disappointed that he’d already defaced his body with four tattoos; despite the fact that Dainton had them done when he was underage and in Chicago when his father couldn’t do a thing about it. Dainton wasn’t going to stop just because his father didn’t agree; the two men clearly didn’t get on anyway. So Dainton continued to draw until his project partner turned up; he wanted this to be over as quickly as possible and so he’d came prepared with ideas, but he could only hope she’d have done the work herself and was happy for him to put his name on it.

IT'S FALLING DOWN ON ALL THAT I'VE EVER KNOWN Valene pushed the library door open with her hip and entered carefully. She would have used her hands if it weren't for the giant half painted canvas she had in her hands. She had just left art class and she was running a little late because she had completely forgotten that she was supposed to work on her English project with Dainton during her free period--emphasis on forgotten. Dainton, on the other hand, had turned down many attempts of Valene's to meet up and work on this project, giving Valene an array of excuses that she was starting to think weren't legit. But after a--rather nasty--exchange over IM, Valene had finally gotten Dainton to meet her to work.
Valene inwardly sighed in relief when she saw him sitting at a table waiting for her. Part of her was afraid that he was going to bail and that she was going to have to physically drag his arse into the library to work. The other part of her was disappointed that he did show up. After their little IM exchange she wasn't too happy with him and it would take all of her will power to keep from cracking snarky remarks at him. But, the sooner they got the project done the sooner they'd never have to speak to each other again so overall she was happy he showed up.
When she approached and carefully leaned her canvas against the table she noticed that he was doodling in his note book. Immediately she could tell that it was tattoo, it had that certain "je ne sais quoi" about it that she noticed a lot of tattoo art seemed to have. As she placed her backpack on the floor and proceeded to grab a pencil and a notebook out of it she kept glancing at his sketch, almost mesmerized by the fact that Dainton of all people sketched anything. Finally, she couldn't keep the words down any longer. "Tattoo art, yeah? Maybe there's some hope for you after all."
As Valene sat down she realized that that last sentence probably wasn't the smartest thing to say, especially after their IM exchange, but it was out there and it's not like she could take it back. No use crying over spilled milk. But still, she hoped he wasn't still pissed about their conversation. She knew he had a right to be, Valene definitely went a little overboard with the nastiness, but she couldn't help it. People like him pissed her off almost as much as plastic people--like his girlfriend for instance. It was probably too harsh on her part to think that way, he was probably a pretty decent person once you got to know him--yeah right--but there was just something about him that she couldn't stand. What it was, she didn't exactly know, and she hoped she could get through this project fast enough so she'd never have to find out.

Dainton continued to draw absent minded; wishing he’d brought the ear phones for his iPhone with him. He barely noticed the blonde enter the library or make her way over to him. Nor did he noticed as she carefully leaned her canvas against the table on which he sat. It wasn’t that Valene wasn’t a noticeable person; just more that he had no reason to notice- or be friends with; the opinionated art student, whom he’d argued with over the internet. The only reason he’d bothered to turn up was because he knew he had to maintain his GPA to actually stay on the football team; which was something he needed to do since it was one of the only things he enjoyed.
The jock looked up as he finally noticed her set her back pack on the floor. He rolled his eyes and continued to draw. Dainton could tell she was watching him and finally she spoke. He looked up; cocking an eyebrow and scowled at her. ”Just shut it Val. You’re here for English not designing my tattoo.” He retorted bitterly, feeling instantly irritated by her know it all words. Most people could have figured out that he was drawing out an idea for a tattoo; but most people weren’t Valene. She had this irritation about her that made him want to go out of his way and deliberately annoy her; but then he remembered her friendship with Bryce; and something instantly exploded inside of him. There was no way he was playing nice with one of Bryce’s friends. The boy was an absolute baboon; spreading malicious lies about the jock for no good reason. So any friend of Bryce’s was an enemy of Dainton’s; well sort of.
He folded over the page of his note pad; and put down his pen. ”So, how do you want to do this?” He asked her as he leant back in his chair. ”We need this done sooner rather than later. I’ll pay you to do it all if it means we won’t have to do this again.” Dainton indicated; waving his hand in the space between them and this little study session they were having. He was arrogant and sarcastic but beyond that was actually a half decent guy. Valene had already brought out the bad side of him, by stalking him down on IM and being a complete and utter bitch. Despite the fact that he was already not happy about them meeting; and disliked Valene more than he should having just actually met her properly; Dainton couldn’t help but notice her eyes. She had such pretty eyes. Not that her eyes really mattered; except they were real nice.
His head was definitely playing tricks on him today, he knew he shouldn’t have drank as much as he had the night before; but with all of the Serena and her shit going on he just felt baffled. He knew if he didn’t somehow win her back, then he’d end up losing her forever which wasn’t something he wanted to do. But Dainton just couldn’t figure out what to do. The lies Bryce had told Serena popped back into his head and infuriation filled him. ”And before we start; you better keep this to yourself. It’s got nothing to do with Bryce.” He added scowling.

IT'S FALLING DOWN ON ALL THAT I'VE EVER KNOWN Valene rolled her eyes at his retort. She could have started a argument, but she wasn’t in the mood for that, but the fact that he called her Val pissed her off enough to correct him once again. Her English accent was strangely more prevalent than usual as she said, “I’m gonna tell you one more time: only my friends can call me Val. To you it’s Valene. Got it? Va-leen.” She pronounced her name out just as she did during their argument online. She radiated annoyance. On top of having a natural irritation about him, Dainton was a jerk to one of her friends--Bryce, and messing with Valene’s friends was like messing with Valene. And messing with Valene was like messing with a pacifistic, and much prettier, version of the devil. It was a death wish.
As Dainton drew in his notebook, Valene watched him mockingly—at least at first. He seemed very interested in his little doodle. Being as irritated with him as she was, she began to internally criticize his work. She went bit by bit, picking it apart and “correcting” it in her head. His style was raw. It was that of an amateur. Although… in the very back of her mind she couldn’t help but secretly love how unsophisticated and wild it was. She unconsciously compared it to her own refined style, a style that took her years to finally get right. It was not to say that didn’t love her own style, but in all honesty, even though it was just a simple doodle, she was getting a strange thrill from his design that she only got from very few, select works, and secretly longed to see more.
As he continued to doodle her eyes wondered up from his drawing to his face. If Dainton wasn’t so irritating she might actually had thought that the blonde boy was attractive. Really attractive. Because, as much as she’d tried to suppress those thoughts, she couldn’t help but think them. She was especially drawn to his hair. She was almost tempted to reached out and twirl her fingers in the wild curls of his golden blonde mane… almost. When Dainton turned the page in his notebook, Valene’s mind was immediately snapped back into reality. She blinked and her annoyance with the blonde boy in front of her returned instantly. She barked a laugh at his offer. “Are you mad? You honestly think that paying me would get me to do all the work on my own? You could pay me all the bloody money in the world and steal me the original Mona Lisa and I still wouldn’t take this on all by myself. She leaned back in her chair crossing her arms and her right leg over her left, indicating that that discussion was over and was not to be brought up again. She would not have him slack off on this project. She just wouldn't bloody take it.
Valene was taken aback by Dainton’s sudden comment. What on earth did Bryce have to do with their project? Valene raised an eyebrow at the boy and waited to see if he’d give an explantion for his sudden comment. But before he even got the chance, it suddenly made sense to Valene. When she really thought about it, his comment wasn’t that random. From the little Valene knew about Dainton’s relationship with his so called “girlfriend”, she knew that Dainton and Serena weren’t on the best of terms at the moment, and it had something to do with Bryce. But that’s all she really knew. But she had no pity on Dainton. She didn’t care what happened between Serena and him. “One, you say that like you thought I had the intention of running straight to Bryce after this. Just because I’m friends with him and I know he doesn’t like you, doesn’t mean I’m a gossip and I’m gonna run to him like a little chav and tell him about this. I don’t like this any more than you do, and I don’t really want people to think that I normally associate with you. And two, are you afraid Serena will take this little meeting the wrong way?” In the beginning, she intended that entire comment to be bitchy, but by the time she reached the second part, the bitchyness had left her voice and was replaced by pure curiosity. Because, let’s be honest here, just because she didn’t spread gossip, doesn’t mean she didn’t get a little thrill from hearing it.

Dainton rolled his eyes as she began to complain about the nickname he gave her. He’d heard plenty of people calling her Val and he couldn’t see why it was such an issue. ”Yeah yeah, Valeeeen. Whatever you say.” He laughed slightly at himself. He knew he would be annoying her which was his prime goal today; that and completing the work. He couldn’t really cope with spending more time than necessary with the English art student. She was naturally irritating despite having decent features and a beautiful smile. Dainton was very aware that he wasn’t an artist, although he could have been maybe, if he’d actually applied himself. He was aware her eyes were watching him draw; probably ready to rip his design to shreds. ”Look Valeeeen, I’m no artist so you can stop inspecting my work.” And with that he turned the page of the notebook. She laughed at his offer and he sighed, leaning back in the chair. ”Why not? Let’s face it you don’t want to work with me; your making that particularly obvious. You’re being difficult about this.” He stated bluntly, ”Have you even read the book?” He asked referring to the play by Shakespeare; Romeo & Juliet. Dainton, for once actually had made the effort by reading it, and he’d watched the modern movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and Clare Danes. Their project was to explore one of the themes in the play; love, fate and chance, or duality – imagery of light and dark, Dainton had figured the easiest one was to explore love since the two main characters fell into it, but he had no idea what Valene wanted to do. ”So I thought love would be a good theme.” He suggested, flicking through his notebook to find the notes he’d written prior to their meeting.
Dainton watched Valene’s expression as she seemed somewhat taken back by his comment about Bryce. He had assumed; perhaps out of paranoia that Bryce wanted to trip him up; that he was waiting to watch the blonde trip up so he could sly in and steal his Serena. She began to speak and summarised things pretty well; the blonde jock raised an eyebrow and sighed slightly. ”Yeah well, some people would. Most people are waiting for me to screw things up with Serena. Especially Bryce.” Dainton sighed feeling pretty irritated by the thought and the admission he’d given to Valene. ”Serena knows were just studying but Bryce indicated otherwise. I just… I don’t want to be screwing things up before it’s even really started.” He sighed; running a hand through his messy hair. He had little idea why he was divulging such information to the petite blonde but it just seemed right. She seemed actually okay. Dainton shook his head and smiled, ”Let’s just get on with it, and if Bryce decides to turn this into something else; then you can set him straight since I’m well aware you hate me anyway.” He laughed sarcastically before pulling his book out of his bag and setting it down on the table. ”So where do you want to start?”
The blonde jock was very aware that the nerds and regular occupants of the library were casting him glances and speculating as to why he was there. He usually done his home work at home; but since he wasn’t about to invite Valene to his home it looked like this was one of the only ways they would be able to meet up and study. It was a strange feeling to be sat in the library- not the horror movie scene he had somehow expected. Dainton looked up at Valene and had he been single he’d have used this meeting as a chance to sleaze and seduce her. And even though he was technically single; Dainton was trying to prove to Serena that he didn’t need to bed a different girl each week; plus it was blatantly obvious that Dainton wasn’t Valene’s favourite person and therefore he knew he’d be shot down if he even tried.

IT'S FALLING DOWN ON ALL THAT I'VE EVER KNOWN Valene rolled her eyes when Dainton stretched out her name but decided not to say anything. It wasn’t worth saying anything. He was just being immature. She knew he was going out of his way to annoy her and he was achieving his goal quite successfully. “ Believe it or not I actually kinda like it, but fine,” she said as she put her hands up in defense. “Be that way.” |
Dainton sighed when Valene laughed at his offer. She took a little offence when he said she was being difficult. “Yeah,” she began sarcastically. “I’m the one being difficult.” She uncrossed her legs and arms and leaned her elbows on the table, intertwined her fingers and rested her chin on the back of them. “You’re right, I really don’t want to work with you, but even more so, I don’t want to do this project alone. She pulled the book and her binder out of her backpack and opened the binder up to her notes that she had been taking. “Yes, of course I read the book,” she said without looking up at him. That was a stupid question, she wasn’t like him. She wasn’t lazy. She actually put effort into schoolwork. “That’s fine with me,” she said looking back up at him. Valene raised an eyebrow at Dainton, surprised by his openness about his situation with Serena and Bryce. “Yeah, well, I’m not some people… and I’m not Bryce so you have nothing to worry about,” she said and without even thinking, she flashed him a reassuring smile. She could tell that Dainton was not happy about the fact that he had just revealed something that personal like that to Valene. And for a second, she almost felt bad for him. At his second comment, she only nodded, not really sure how to reply to that. She watched as Dainton ran a hand through his hair, again having the urge to reach over and twirl her fingers in his golden locks. God! What was with her? It was just hair! But by god… it was a bloody good head of hair… Dainton’s next comment startled her a bit. “I don’t hate you,” she blurted. As soon as the words were out in the open she wished she could grab them and shove them back in her mouth, but instead, she just clamped her mother shut and pretended that her notes suddenly became extremely interesting. She was glad when Dainton changed the subject by asking where they should start. She continued to look through her notes, but this time with a purpose. “Well," she began. “I think we should focus on each different kind of love expressed in the book individually first. So, we could start by analyzing the fickle love Romeo feels for Rosaline in the beginning of the book, first…?” she said, her suggestion ending more like a question.
